Last week’s article was introductory teaching on the voice of God. This week we are going into the deeper waters of hearing the voice of God. It is the object of this series 2 to focus on the various aids for hearing the voice of God.
Spiritual Aids for Hearing God’s Voice
Prayer
Some believers are contented to regard the place of prayer as an avenue for asking God to give them this or give them that, without actually knowing that the place of prayer is where the voice of God is heard. When the voice of God ceases in the ears of any child of God, the first place the child of God is supposed to query is his prayer alter.
Leviticus 6:13
The fire shall ever be burning upon the altar; it shall never go out.
God gave the Israelites instruction that the fire upon the altar must never burn out. As long as the fire upon the altar is not burnt out, the priest can come at any moment to offer sacrifice to the Lord, and it will be accepted. It is the same thing that happens in the realm of the spirit. If you continue to service your prayer altar with constant prayers and communion with the Lord, the voice of the Lord will never cease in your ears. However, if you become relaxed towards prayer, you are simply telling God I do not want to hear from you anymore. Those who have grasped the importance of prayer as a source of God’s voice, always maintain their prayer alters in order to continue to hear the voice of God.
Those who have abandoned the place of prayer can never hear the voice of God. Always come to the place of prayer with the expectation that, God will always speak. That is the reason why we wait on the Lord sometimes so that he can talk to us. Is it not at the place of prayer that we do that? Of course, it is.
The Bible
The Bible contains the words of God spoken to men from generations past. Since the Bible is the word that God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit spoke to men, if you read the Bible you are familiarising yourself with the voice of God. It is through the word of God that you will know how God speaks to men. His character and his attitude towards his voice. If the Bible contains the voice of God, whenever a believer refuses to read the Bible he has denied himself the privilege of hearing the voice of God. The more you read, the more you hear. The less you read, the less you hear. It is as simple as that. Creating a daily schedule for studying the Bible will not only change and transform your life, but it will also open the ears of your spirit to hear the voice of God. Don’t even give an excuse to say that you are busy. No amount of busyness can be justified for allowing your Bible to gather dust. That kind of attitude would prevent you from hearing the voice of God.
Interestingly, the Bible is available in every format today. So you have no excuse for failing to read your Bible.
Psalms 29:3
The voice of the Lord is upon the waters: the God of glory thundereth: the Lord is upon many waters.
The Bible says the voice of God is upon the waters. The water under reference in the book of Psalms 29 is the word of God. How do we know that?
Ephesians 5:26
That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
The Bible says the water is the word. If you want to hear the voice of God, look at what the Bible says. The farther you are from the word of God, the farther you will be from his voice.
The spiritual Aid of Fasting
How many of us actually know that our fasting can enhance the way we hear the voice of God?
Acts 13:2
As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.
The Bible says as they ministered unto the Lord and fasted, the Holy Ghost said. The Holy Ghost wouldn’t have said if they haven’t been fasting. Any believer who is behaving like he can’t do without food is a believer that may leave his ears too dull for the voice of God to gain an audience. Whenever you fast, it does not only gives you the opportunity to hear the voice of God, it enhances your spiritual sensitivity to be able to hear the voice of God and pick up every form of impression which the Holy Spirit may drop on your heart.
Service
In Acts 13:2, the Bible passage which we have just quoted above, it says that the disciples were ministering unto the Lord. It was in the course of ministration that the voice of God was made available to the disciples. If you make yourself available to the Lord in service, you must hear his voice. There are different avenues of service. You can make yourself available to serve the Lord in your local church, by interceding and praying for others, et cetera. A believer who is dedicated to serving God will always live in the arena of God’s voice.
When you hear someone complaining that he doesn’t hear the voice of God, ask that person if he is actually serving the Lord. If he hasn’t been serving the Lord, he can’t hear the voice of God.
Intercession
Often relegated to the background, the life of intercession is one of the ways to hear the voice of God. To intercede is to pray for somebody who is in need of your prayers. It could be a spouse, kids, family members, colleagues, and even your neighbors. Intercessory need abound in every nook and cranny of our lives. What some people need from us is not our money but our prayers. There are some who have money but are poor in health. For that person, no amount of money can satisfy the deep longing for his body to be free from the captivity of sickness. What he wants is to be healthy. You can take up that burden and begin to pray for the healing of that person. When you do that, God will begin to speak to you about other areas of the person’s life that need to be prayed for. Maybe you prayed for his health today, tomorrow God may say pray for his wife. I have experienced this whenever I pray for people, shouldering their burdens upon my life. I notice that God speaks to me about other areas of their lives.

The Place of Worship
2 Kings 3:15-17
15 But now bring me a minstrel. And it came to pass, when the minstrel played, that the hand of the Lord came upon him.
16 And he said, Thus saith the Lord, Make this valley full of ditches.
17 For thus saith the Lord, Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, that ye may drink, both ye, and your cattle, and your beasts.
Worship is a spiritual aid for hearing the voice of God. A worshipper will always be swimming in the ocean of God’s voice. Elisha needed to hear the voice of God; the moment they brought a minstrel to him, God started speaking to Elisha. The implication of the Scripture is simple – if you want to hear me, then worship me. No wonder the Bible says that we should worship God in spirit and in truth. Make worship a part of your life to continue to hear the voice of God unceasingly.
